Attention Span, Learning & Mentoring

Is professional study of electronic music still relevant in today’s information-rich society, or is watching tutorial videos on YouTube “enough”? How do we wade through the amount of information given to us and learn to focus on the things that matter? How does one make the jump from artist to teacher? All of this and more will be covered as professor PJ Geissinger (AKA Starkey) joins us for a session on music & education.

OPTICAL 1 : GHOSTS IN THE SHADOWS
For this year's opening OPTICAL showcase Decibel is proud to be bringing together four artists that exemplify ambient sound design and composition.

Over the past 18 years, German artist Robert Henke (Monolake) has contributed immensely to electronic music – from his early releases on the now legendary Chain Reaction label to one of the original software developers responsible for Ableton Live. Henke is an expert sound designer and composer – his works range from organic sound design to beautifully haunting compositions that often pay homage to 20th century composers like Philip Glass, Brian Eno and Steve Reich.

Brock Van Wey (bddub) is an American artist and producer currently residing in Shaoxing, China. His compositions have been praised by Pitchfork Media as “built from tapered, drenching loops of tone, massed in respiring pulses.” Beginning his own production forays in 2006, his overtly emotional and hypnotic sound spread quickly through releases on his own Quietus imprint, before further honing his trademark sound into one that has given rise to an army of albums on Home Normal, Echospace [detroit], Darla, Glacial Movements, and many more, as well as becoming a regular three years' running on Kompakt’s legendary “Pop Ambient” series.

Greek sound artist Dalot (Maria Papadomanolaki) creates a fine balancebetween sculpting the perfect sound and shattering it . Her compositions may ascend to gilded heights aboard an angelic vocal or divine melody or, conversely, drop the listener into a smoggy dystopia alive only with the whirring of dying machines. Now based out of New York city, her releases for San Francisco's N5MD label “demonstrates her skill at “creating moments of lush ambience, emotion and texture by blending elements of phonography, electro-acoustic composition and minimal electronica with more traditional musical elements such as voice, guitar, glockenspiel and tablas.”

ABOUT OPTICAL

OPTICAL is Decibel Festival's audiovisual series - focusing on ambient, modern classical, experimental sound art, live video and installations.

Curated by festival founder Sean Horton and co-curator Rafael Anton Irisarri, OPTICAL creates a platform for contemporary new media outside the mainstream in Seattle.

Performances and installations at OPTICAL bridge the gab between these disciplines. The resulting mixed media programing is an amalgam of styles and genres that defy easy classification. Technological, captivating, immersive, entrancing is one way to describe it - beautiful, emotive, and physical is another. In all, creativity to its fullest potential of endless possibilities.

In 2012 Decibel Festival present five very distinct and unique OPTICAL showcases.

PLEASE NOTE: This event ends around 9PM, offering festival attendees the opportunity to enjoy other festival showcases that will be going until 2AM.

For fans of Murcof, Tim Hecker and Brian Eno

An old adage holds that although all music is sound, not all sound is music. Of course, Maria Papadomanolaki-a.k.a sound artist Dalot-will literally hear nothing of it. Whether sampling gulls from her window in Brighton or sirens ripping through New York City, all sound has value. Although “ambient” or post-rock are worthy descriptors, influences ranging from soundwash engineers Stars of the Lid, eco-glitch pioneers Boards of Canada and minimal multi-instrumentalist Colleen make...

dB Films 1 : Live re-scoring Jean Rollin's La Vampire Nue

dB Film 1 : Jean Rollin's “La Vampire Nue” with live re-scoring by Demdike Stare

Polarities in motion, Demdike Stare create tension that pulls vibrations through time’s prism. Refracting the familiar, they shape it into new forms that are almost recognizable, but not quite, leaving you stuttering for the right word, the right description. But perhaps there is where the magic lies – in the un-naming of things – for the sounds they create are not yet known and challenge how we communicate about them.

Decibel proudly invites you to enter a reconstructed present – percolating with fascination, fear & uncertainty – as Demdike Stare re-score surrealist Jean Rollin’s 1970 erotic horror film, La Vampire Nue. Experience what happens when a re-purposed past collides with an imagined future. Fall into darkness with us and ride the self-discovery that emerges.

Kimbra

Maybe you know her from her hit singles Cameo Lover, Good Intent and Two Way Street, or you’re one of the many voters that helped put all three in the ranks of Triple J’s Hottest 100 - the world’s biggest music poll. Maybe you’re one of the 12,000,000+ total views of her stylish videos on YouTube. Or the fact that she won the ARIA for 2011 Best Female Artist. Perhaps you better recognise her from her duet with Gotyé on the world-conquering Somebody That I Used To Know, a chart-topping hit in 11 countries world-wide, and No. 1 for 8 weeks on the Australian singles chart. The name may ring a bell from any one of her electric live shows, including performances at Splendour In The Grass, Big Day Out, Meredith, Parklife and a sold-out national headline tour, with forthcoming shows including Groovin’ The Moo.

But the story goes further back. Spending her early years gigging around her native New Zealand, it was only once Kimbra borrowed a small eight-track recorder from her school’s musical department that her songwriting blossomed in earnest. After a furious period of creativity, including the inklings that would become her debut album, she was discovered by manager Mark Richardson of OutPost Management at the tender age of 17, who enabled her to relocate to Melbourne to follow her musical career. She’s been carving her own path ever since.

Kimbra’s debut record Vows, three and-a-half years in the making, charts not only her growth and development musically over this time, but personally as well. Recorded and arranged both at home and across various studios, it presents her unique worldview on life and love. Even at twenty-one years of age, Kimbra already possesses the maturity and musical sophistication of the mavericks she is so often compared to - from vocal legends Nina Simone and Jeff Buckley, to radicals the likes of Prince, and contemporary artists such as Björk and Janelle Monaé.

Vows was self-produced and with the refined skills of Francois Tetaz (Bertie Blackman, Gotye); whose focus on imagery taught her to treat the album like a film and Australian Urban export M-Phazes (Amerie, Pharoahe Monch) If Vows is a film then, what is it about?

A smoky romance one scene, a film noir the next - Vows is a genre-defying, an eclectic journey of joyful triumph and a darker introspection. A dazzling, colourful soundtrack to travel its conceptual groove through a mix of styles. Migrating confidently from triumphant neo-pop built on stacked harmonies and joyful hooks, to moodier, reflective moments that showcase her sophisticated vocals. Upon release, Vows swiftly achieved critical and commercial success. Debuting at No. 3 in Kimbra’s native New Zealand (Gold Status), and at No. 5 in the Australian album charts and soon attained Platinum status within three weeks of release. Subsequently, Vows has been shortlisted for the AMP Awards.

Having signed an international deal with Warner Music, Kimbra, complemented by her band of funky virtuosos, is now set to take on the States. With a slew of SXSW showcase gigs; touring the nation in support of Gotyé, with further dates confirmed with Foster The People she’s preparing to unleash Vows to the USA this May. She’s making in-roads with the country’s most eclectic production and writing talent, whose combined CV’s mirror Kimbra’s own multifaceted influences. Co-writing with soul star John Legend, recording with iconic producer Mike Elizondo (Dr Dre, Fiona Apple) as well as working with Greg Kurstin (The Bird and The Bee, The Flaming Lips, Foster The People) plus Mark Foster & A-Trak and Keefus Green (Mike Patton, Mini Mansions). Kimbra is rapidly establishing herself both locally and internationally as a significant talent. A fresh, exciting creative spirit in today’s music industry.

Just over a decade ago, Seth Broman made a move that would end up having a hand in shaping the sound of one of the strongest bass scenes in the nation. Moving from dance floor junglist to selector, Broman took the moniker Grym and by 2000, he was cutting his teeth as one of the city’s premier drum & bass DJs in the Seattle circuit. Two years later, along with a few like-minded individuals, he set to creating the soundtrack to Seattle’s underground. Since its inception, Onset...

Midnight Shift

Midnight Shift is a spirited entity grounded in sound. It is an electronic music events organization and record label uprising bringing the emerging and established together in production and performance on one global stage. The organization has been active since 2008.
Almost eight years after the release of "24 Heures" (released by Goodlife), Oxia, a pioneer of the French electronic scene, is back in 2012 at last with a new LP. Perfectionist par excellence, Olivier Raymond is well known for his rare but highly appreciated productions.
As a DJ, Terrence Parker (known to many as "TP") has become legendary for his quite uncommon yet skillful turntablism style of playing House Music. TP's collective musical works and pioneering efforts have been recognized as a valuable contribution to Detroit's music history, as well as the International History Dance Music. As with his deejaying style, Basic Soul Unit's productions can swing from lush and soulful melodic techno to jacking beats or smokey deep house (with hints of above aforementioned influences). He has released music on respected labels such as Dolly, Philpot, Mathematics, Mule Electronic, Versatile, Ostgut Ton, New Kanada, and Creme Organization. Norman Chung makes you move and opens your mind, letting you accept a wider spectrum of music and at a level of quality that sets the bar for you thereafter.

Global Selektors 1

Global Selektors 1 will feature three artists who have been bridging the gap between UK underground bass music, disco and house. Over the past three years, Brooklyn's FaltyDL has managed to release on several of the UK's most influential labels, including Ninja Tune and Planet Mu. Impossible to categorize, Falty's output ranges from 2-step, to juke, to deep house, to grime and all points in-between.
Originally known as co-founder and producer for the influential Skull Disco imprint, in recent years Appleblim has been exploring the soulful sounds of deep house and disco both as a deejay and producer. For the past two years Slow Hands has been one of the main proponents of the slow-mo and sultry house revolution. Drawing from blues, jazz and trippy electronic music, his productions and deejaying spans decades of musical influence.

OPTICAL 2 : ASCENSION
For our second OPTICAL showcase, we'll be presenting four incredibly talented artists, all known for manipulating traditional musical instruments (voice, guitars, synths) in very unconventional ways to create ethereal music, to the point in which abstraction meets physical dynamics.

For the past couple years, Brooklyn-resident Julianna Barwick has been at the forefront of hazy pop music. Lacking definable lyrics, Julianna’s songs create their own themes sonically and leave nameless emotional impressions. Julianna’s talents as a vocalist push most of the musical strength in her works, her choice of melodic live vocal looping with vocal percussion is fascinating and dizzying. Described by Pitchfork Media as “as a digital update on sacred hymns”, Julianna's voice is both timeless and transcendental.

For her Decibel debut, Julianna Barwick will be collaborating with visual artist Christina Vantzou (of The Dead Texan).

Estonian chanteuse Maria Minerva is a psychedelic, avant-pop and lo-fi music producer and artist currently based in London. Her music expresses the alienated restlessness of modern women who inhabit a wi-fi world that combines connectivity and isolation. Her works have been praised by influential journalist Simon Reynolds, who wrote of her music 's “high breathy voice in reverb, adding blurriness to the deliberately “smudgy” production.”

Anenon is the brainchild of Brian Simon, an up-and-coming American producer from Los Angeles. Brian carves out highly textured sounds that are extremely personal, patient and thoughtful – music to live inside of, always revealing new paths with each listen.

Opening the showcase are Lulacruza, an an electronic folk duo at the junction of the hypermodern and the ancient. Their music weaves together hypnotic female singing, South American instruments, found sound objects, field recordings, and electronic manipulation.

PLEASE NOTE: This event ends around 9PM, offering festival attendees the opportunity to enjoy other festival showcases that will be going until 2AM.

For fans of Stars of the Lid, Dead Can Dance and Laurie Anderson.

Julianna Barwick

Asthmatic Kitty
Describing this hazy, hallucinogenic album from Brooklyn's Julianna Barwick, you can neatly take Panda Bear's trippier tracks as a jumping off point, as Barwick loops and layers beautiful vocal harmonies with a similar slow-motion deep sea vibe. But this lovely debut is more than just derivative, and the wordless sound collages are transporting. Lacking definable lyrics, Julianna’s songs create their own themes sonically and leave nameless emotional impressions. Julianna’s talents...

dB Films 2 : Screening of Fennesz and Wozencroft's Liquid Music

dB Film 2 : Screening of Fennesz+Wozencroft's "Liquid Music" with Q&A by Jon Wozencroft

Seattle's TOUCH.30 edition will feature the North America debut screening of "Fennesz+Wozencroft: Liquid Music" an audiovisual collaboration between Austria's guitar-extraordinaire Christian Fennesz and Touch label founder & curator Jon Wozencroft (UK).

"Liquid Music was made in 2001, in conjunction with the music Christian Fennesz was developing during that fertile period when the future was still a good idea. The first version was premiered during the Touch tour of 2001, the time of Fennesz's Endless Summer and the steady movement towards Venice. The footage for Liquid Music originates from Prague, Paxos, Crete, Cephalonia, Messinia, London and one short clip from Monterey Bay. It was filmed on H-8 and mini-DV between 1995 and 2001. The main idea was to film everything through the lens, with no post production other than the compilation of many years work into a coherent whole. Fennesz's music, and its ascendent quality, made that a pleasure. The optical quality is on the cusp between analogue and digital resolution. In many respects it‚ "an exchange of values as much as working methods." - Jon Wozencroft (London, 2012)

Jon Wozencroft will be presenting an introduction to the work and a brief Q&A with the artist will ensue after the screening.

Named after Greater London's own circular autobahn, the M25 - central to the early Rave scene and party network in the South East during the halcyon 'daze' of Acid House - Orbital are manned by brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll. Founded in the late 1980s, Orbital released a string of classic 1990s singles including Chime, Style, The Box and Satan. Paul and Phil put their partnership on hold in 2004, but a five-year absence only increased demand for their exhilarating music and legendary live...

Dropping Gems Showcase
For their 2012 Decibel Festival Showcase, Dropping Gems has assembled a fresh group of innovative electronic producers in service of their perennial effort to bring thought-provoking electronic music to the club environment. Balam Acab headlines the showcase with his live set, a locus of thick ghostly ambience. Few other artists have been able to compose music so warm, sorrowful, and personal, and still manage to totally envelop (and move) their audiences in the process. Devonwho is a synth visionary, a veteran of buttery chords and percussive inventiveness. A long time friend and supporter of DG, Devon never fails to bring a smile to his audiences faces, and his music is the sonic embodiment of that positivity.
Natasha Kmeto is a DG crew member and soulful dancefloor demolition expert. Her incredible vocal talent enshrouds inventively composed beds of bass and rhythmic texture, great on record but even more visceral when seen live. DJAO is also a DG crew member, in addition to being a cultivator of bass-induced shivers. His music is typically dance oriented but can lapse into ambient drone at a moment's notice, only to build back again into pulsing swung-out floor burners.

DJAO

Dropping Gems
Seattle native DJAO, aka Alex Osuch, has been a DJ for over a decade, but the last two years have seen him shift focus towards his work as a producer. It began at the in-office studio of a former employer, where he was permitted to come in after-hours and hungrily experiment late into the night. It’s been in the past year, however, that his music has really begun to take shape and flourish. After joining up with Dropping Gems, Alex began to produce in earnest, and his live performances...

Balam Acab

Tri Angle
Balam Acab, like Salem and oOoOO, traverse the same shadowy territories that seem at once sensual and unnerving. Balam Acab creates something akin to Burial being slowly drowned in an ocean of drone, a cybernetic limbo haunted by distant machine moans, those trademark ghostly digi-diva vocals positively lost in another world all together.

Natasha Kmeto

Dropping Gems
Natasha Kmeto is a Portland-based singer and electronic producer. Drawing on rich musical backgrounds in jazz, r&b, dance, and hip-hop, she describes her music as “futuristic soul.” After journeying through music school and life as a session musician, and migrating from LA to Portland, Kmeto has arrived at her current project, her most independent and passionate enterprise so far. Exploring the more soulful side of beats and future bass, Kmeto combines talent and acuity behind...

Pop Fusion
Pop, hip hop and electronic music have gradually been letting their guard down, playfully flirting towards something new. Though their pop sensibilities remain, it's clear that technology and influence refuse to be denied. The Chicago duo Houses engineer beautifully textural pop tunes, steeped in thoughtful patience lyrics that float above warm synth tones and that come "from a place of love and ease". The Italian A/V quartet port-royal will be making their first trek to North America to perform at this year's Decibel Festival. They play a dreamy, heady, melancholic, wide-deep music on the border among electronica, ambient, shoegaze, minimal techno featuring several dance elements. K.flay is a deeply talented female MC and multi-instrumentalist whose diverse influences range from indie pop to old school hip hop. Her talents have led her to share the stage with a diverse selection of luminaries, including Passion Pit, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, and 3OH!3.

Bass Cadets presented by Starborne
For this year's Starborne showcase, three bona-fide bass cadets will be flexing their own signature sounds ranging from trap to dubstep to glitch. After playing to massive audiences at some of the largest festivals in North America, you can expected a spirited MiMOSA set surfing the sound waves between trap and dubstep. Dave Tipper is no stranger to Decibel. After delivering the most memorable set of our inaugural 2004 program, he went on to headline our 2005 NYE party and closing night zat our 2006 festival. A consummate professional and DMC worthy turntablist, Tipper never ceases to bring the heat.
Igniting the party will be bass scientist and college music professor Paul "Starkey" Geissinger, who's futurist compositions have landed him dozens of releases and remixes on some of the world's most respected labels (Warp, Planet Mu, Ninja Tune, Mad Decent and Ed Banger).

Jet Jam is a brand new "eclectic dance party" conceived and hosted by UK producer Darren Williams aka Star Slinger. His goal is to "simply throw parties where people let their hair down" and "we don't care about genre, the BPM of the tunes, just having ourselves a merry-ass time". Sound likes fun, right? Headlining, we have Jet Jam host, Star Slinger, whose 2011 Decibel Festival set was heralded as a highlight by nearly everyone in attendance. Co-headliner Baths will be following up with a live performance sure to keep the heads nodding and kids swooning over his gorgeous melodies, intricate rhythms and thoughtful lyrics. Baths

Anticon
For mercurial Los Angeles music-maker Will Wiesenfeld, Baths has been a long time coming. The 21-year-old has spent the better part of his days living amidst “pleasant” and “unremarkable” in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley, so perhaps it’s due to a general lack of local inspiration that Wiesenfeld’s own work has never fit into a prefab box of its own. Over the last six years, under the handle of [Post-Foetus], Wiesenfeld has gainfully explored the...

An LA native, Laufer grew up listening to "stuff like DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin, M83 stuff with some sort of cinematic vision." He started making beats when he was 14, but "didn't really do it with any sort of purpose until I was like 17 or 18." That was also around the...

Surefire presents
Formed in 2006, Surefire Productions is an International collective whose mission is to bring forward thinking electronic music to the listening public. Headquartered in San Francisco, the company has partnered with many worldwide organizations to provide the highest quality events and promotions possible.
Through the influential record shop Pelikan Neck, xxxy picked up on the early forms of dubstep and began focusing his productions on bass heavy garage influenced tracks. Fast forward to the January 2011 xxxy release of You Always Start it/Ordinary Things on Ten Thousand Yen. This increased xxxy’s burgeoning reputation with Pitchfork picking “Ordinary Things” as it’s best new track of the day. As a DJ, xxxy has produced well received mixes for FACT, BBQ & URB as well as playing dates all over the UK and Europe.
Kuedo is Jamie Teasdale, who was formerly one half of groundbreaking dubstep duo Vex’d. While the music of Vex’d is typified by half-step beats and heavy low-end, his music as Kuedo is more akin to the futurist-escapist, dreamlike style of Rustie, Ikonika et al.
Objekt describes his music as adventures in machine music built to make subs rattle and feet wiggle; a convoluted mess of elektrology and teknology, 3-step, bass-core, post windmill, proto-minimal wankstep, gondola, shithouse, acid wonk, no more, no less.

Modern Love Showcase

Modern Love is a record label based in Manchester, UK founded in 2002 by the staff behind Pelicanneck, the former record store that would soon morph into the estimable online retailer Boomkat. Initially acting an outlet for deep, dystopian electro by the likes of Bitstream and iL.EK.TRO, over the past decade its fortunes have become bound up with the ever-evolving artistry of two producers in particular: Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott, who have clocked up numerous releases for the imprint both solo and as part of duo/group projects like Pendle Coven, Demdike Stare and Millie & Andrea.
During the latter part of the 2000s, Manchester-based DJ/producer Andy Stott transitioned from making high-quality dub techno to releasing a singular and more adventurous strain with an approach that favored leaden tempos and unsettling, sample-based textures. From 2005 through 2011, Stott recorded exclusively for his hometown’s Modern Love label, where he quickly became a key member of the roster alongside fellow travelers Claro Intelecto and Demdike Stare. Demdike Stare is the occult themed collaboration between Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker. Using the stepping stones of vinyl and VHS history as inspiration, and obscure hardware as the means, Demdike Stare create ethereal music that emanates from the unconscious. Cut Hands is a tribal noise project from Edinburgh, Scotland, formed in 2008 by William Bennett, the guiding force behind the recently rested Whitehouse. Cut Hands finds Bennett indulging his love of the African, particularly Ghanaian and Congolese, percussion that he has avidly collected over the years.

Demystifying Max for Live

Musical innovators have always sought new ways of making unique, personal sounds. Today’s most creative computer musicians are pushing the boundaries with Max for Live, turning Ableton Live into their own customized instrument.

Decibel 2012 hosts a unique lecture and demonstration of Ableton “Max for Live” by Clint Sand and video collaborator, Jennifer McClain. Clint is the creator and host of the largest free Max for Live device sharing platform at Maxforlive.com and is an Ableton-endorsed artist (see Electronic Polymath: http://www.ableton.com/clint-sand) who performs under the name “synnack”. The session will cover the basic use of Max for Live for beginners, as well as a demonstration of more advanced Max for Live integration with a custom VJ system written in Max/Jitter for more experienced users. Following the set, McClain and Sand will present a a full technical breakdown and discussion of how the audio/visual demonstration was made. Every device, every patch, exposed.

More information on the collaboration can be found at www.0xf8studios.com andwww.synnack.com.

Synnack

Synnack is the artistic moniker of Clint Michael Sand. Defying an easy description, synnack is perhaps best described as experimental electronic music fused with new media performance mediums. Blurring the lines between art installations, music concerts, and audio releases, synnack combines dark ambient/IDM/Glitch-styled sound generation using custom software environments, with analog modular synthesis to manipulate audio and video into sensory experiences ranging from visceral to cerebral...

Mirroring Nature with Music: Sound Composition using Ableton Live

Mirroring Nature with Music is a beginning and/or intermediate level workshop that will use loop-based software music sequencer “Ableton Live” to understand the connection of nature and music. We will learn a series of audio manipulation techniques to create sonic landscapes. We will start with acoustic sound and learn ways in which electronic processing can be used to expand, change, and re-create sound. We will listen to and process field recordings to explore the places they are able to evoke. We will be introduced to computer-generated rhythmic and textural material to broaden our sound world. We will explore and discuss naturally occurring acoustic phenomena and its applications in music.

Participants will gain basic knowledge of “Ableton Live”, as well as expand their concepts of sound, music, space, place, silence and nature. Participants will be invited to explore new ways of engaging their creative process. All levels welcome.

OPTICAL 3 : TOUCH.30
For our third OPTICAL showcase, we proudly celebrate the 30th anniversary of the legendary British audiovisual organization and publishing company Touch - the longest surviving independent contemporary music publisher in the UK.

Biosphere is the main recording name of Geir Jenssen, a Norwegian producer who has released a considerable catalogue of ambient electronic music, mostly notably 1997's Substrata, an album considered by many as one of ambient music's key recordings. Jenssen has also scored a number of films, including Eternal Stars (1993) and Insomnia (1997). The iconic ambient-techno maestro will present at Decibel Festival selections from his critically-acclaimed album “N-Plants” - a work that explores the beauty and vulnerability of Japanese nuclear power facilities.

Seattle-based interdisciplinary artist, curator and composer Rafael Anton Irisarri will perform under his The Sight Below guise, presenting a special live A/V performance/installation commissioned by Touch. Irisarri’s recorded output - described by Pitchfork as “existing in an undifferentiated welter of pop, techno, and classical” - captures an essential vision of floating tones, deep pulsing bass and textured Gaussian curves. His work is widely published in over a dozen labels around the globe, including respected labels like Touch, Morr Music, Ghostly International, Room40 and Miasmah.

Eleh was formed in 1999 as an exploration of analog synthesis. Influenced by early electronic minimalist pioneers such as La Monte Young, Eliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros & Charlemagne Palestine, Eleh creates highly minimal and deeply spiritual pure analog electroacoustic music. Eleh’s work emphasizes the physical presence of sound as it has been inspired by the physical world, focusing on tonal juxtapositions, bass tones and various acoustic phenomenon. He has released numerous records on Touch, Important Records and Taiga Records.

PLEASE NOTE: This event ends around 9:30PM, offering festival attendees the opportunity to enjoy other festival showcases that will be going until 2AM.

Constantly re-inventing herself, Erykah Badu has now embraced a technologically-driven musical collective that can only be described as “the sensational reaction created when the synthetic combines with the organic”. Midnight Shift presents

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti produces and plays almost all of his own music, and is noted for creating drum sounds using primarily his mouth, and sometimes his armpits. His home recording technique gives his music a very lo-fi sound, to the point where new listeners may mistake the era of his music. Pink's influences range from R. Stevie Moore--friend, mentor, and "father of home recording"—to Michael Jackson. Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Dam-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: 'Dame' as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk. Decadance

Dragonette produces dirty, hook-heavy, electro-pop monsters like “I Get Around” and “Competition”, depicting a world of guilt-free promiscuity and sexual predators on the prowl. It’s fair to say, Dragonette are not a band who’ve come up the hard way on the toilet gig circuit. Through a few strokes of fortune their second-ever show was supporting New Order at NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom, followed by a US tour supporting Duran Duran. With recent collaborations on the massive club hits “Hello” with Martin Solveig and “Fire In Your New Shoes” with Kaskade, Dragonette have become one of the more recognized acts in mainstream dance music. The Knocks - Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “Jpatt” Patterson - garnered their name from the early days of their production career when they tirelessly worked out of their home studios and complaining neighbors would knock on their doors. Coupled with DJing and making mixtapes, the pair cobbled together enough money to open their own studio; HeavyRoc Music. Icona Pop is a duo from Stockholm, Sweden. For some time, the duo was based in London, where they attracted international attention, including the debut single "Manners" on French Kitsuné Music, and "Nights Like This" on British Mercury Records. Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo deliver pop music essentials like clapped beats, fizzy electronics, cute female vocals and a Sesame Street chorus.

Red Bull Music Academy Presents: Dixon and Ripperton
Dixon has come to worldwide prominence alongside house music's resurgence. A longtime resident house DJ in Berlin, Dixon has pushed a distinct sound that is heavy on vocals, emotion and variety. His residencies then and now are obviously schooled in the stylistic and technical versatility and skills, attitude, stamina, and experience based on countless nights homing ways to direct a loyal crowd on the dance floor. Ripperton was born in the 70's, one of the most exciting times in music, which would explain his passion for soul music, his 12 inch vinyl collection which knows no bounds and his nickname, (think of one of the best female soul singers of that time). In 2006 he started the well-known underground label, Perspective Records. His long-awaited LP was out early 2010. In 2011 he's teamed up with Deetron on new projects.

Raster-Noton Showcase

Olaf Bender aka Byetone and Frank Bretschneider founded the record label Rastermusic in 1996. Rastermusic wanted to publish their own electronic music projects and those of other similar working artists. Byetone creates his music digitally. He assembles sine tones to complex sound fabrics. Digital clicks and effect plug-ins are essential to create the rhythms.
Kangding Ray is David Letellier. He works in the fields of music, architecture, performances and installations. Letellier evolved as a guitarist and drummer in bands whose influences ranged from noise-rock, to jazz, before buying an Akai sampler, and moving on to electronic music. Emptyset is a Bristol based production project formed in 2005 by James Ginzburg, director of the Multiverse studios and network of labels and the curator and electronic artist Paul Purgas. The project explores the legacy of analogue media, integrating aspects of rhythm, signal processing and spatial recording within the framework of minimalist composition.

OPTICAL 4 : DISCREET TONES
On our fourth OPTICAL showcase we explore the endless possibilities of modern classical/minimalist experimentalism: its past, present and future sonic developments, and its resurgence in electronic music cultures.

Sylvain Chauveau is a French composer and multi-instrumentalist artist currently living in Brussels, Belgium. A key figure in the European modern classical scene, Chauveau reduces song structures to clean lines on the piano, which are accented with strings, guitars, winds and voice, balancing the relationship between song and abstraction in a minimalist way. Since 1998, Sylvain Chauveau has composed music for film and dance performances, as well released albums on Fat Cat (UK), Type (UK), LesDisques du Soleil et de l'Acier (FR), and many others labels around the world. His most ambitious piece to date, however, is titled "You Will Leave No Mark on The Winter Snow" - a composition for piano and electronics with an extreme duration: 7 years of silence, with 17 moments of scattered sound through its total duration.

At Decibel Festival, Sylvain Chauveau will premiere in North America new piece titled “The Metaphysical Basis Of Wabi Sabi” - a 43 minute composition for acoustic guitar played with two e-bows, notebook electronics, shortwave radios, non conventional percussion and human voice, all converging in harmony and tonal immersion.

One of Germany's most exciting new composers, Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm is quickly establishing himself as one of the most prominent and respected figures in the European post-classical scene. Frahm's concerts are deeply emotional and have been described as a “cathartic experience.” With three critically acclaimed albums on Erased Tapes under his belt, Nils has worked and collaborated with many contemporaries such as Peter Broderick, Ólafur Arnalds, Anne Müller, Deaf Center, Efterklang and Dustin O’Halloran amongst other fellow musicians.

ORCAS is a duo comprised of haze-pop auteur Benoît Pioulard and post-minimalist composer Rafael Anton Irisarri. Theirs is a style deeply rooted in personal variations on songform and ambient craft, bridging the furthest outlying aspects of their solo work. ORCAS' debut album was released in April 2012 on Berlin's respected Morr Music label, followed by an European tour in May and June. Their video for single “Arrow Drawn” premiered on Vice.TV while Pitchfork Media praised their album, calling it "a genuine, coherent album that conjures immense shadows and immense depths worthy of its namesake."

CFCF is the stage name of Montreal-based electronic musician Michael Silver. His music conjures far-away landscapes and voyages through a style which is at times melancholic, propulsive and ecstatic.

PLEASE NOTE: This event ends around 9:30PM, offering festival attendees the opportunity to enjoy other festival showcases that will be going until 2AM.

CFCF is the stage name of Canadian electronic musician Michael Silver. Based in Montreal, Silver took the name CFCF from the call sign of the city’s CFCF-TV. Morr Music
The courtship of ambient music and traditional songform has been a long and tenuous one, almost to the point that their differences seem irreconcilable. Spanning decades with only a few points of obscure intersections, the occasions on which the two styles have met and crossed into the pop culture lexicon have often yielded a contrary, oil-and-water form. The abstract nature of the “ambient” genre and instant gratification of the “pop” song require deft hands for...

Cerebral Vortex presented by Dimensions Festival

For over 30 years techno has served as a canvas for some of underground dance music's most adventurous artists and sounds. The stripped-down format has allowed for continued growth and evolution, while new digital tools have offered infinite sonic possibilities. At the forefront of this movement we're proud to present three of techno's most prolific artists, all pushing the boundaries of time and space through precision productions.

With a PhD in computational biology, it's clear that Max Cooper is one of the brainiest producers in underground dance music today. With a dozen EPs and over 40 remixes to his credit over the past three years he is without question one of the most prolific. A seductive mixture of intricate melody and poly-rhythms, Cooper’s music is as cinematic as it is visceral. This is brain-dance of the highest caliber. Frankfurt has given birth to some of techno's most influential figures, but none as diverse and productive as Roman Flügel. As half of the techno duo Alter Ego, Flügel helped forge the neo-electro movement that paved the way for artists like Justice, Boys Noize and Deadmau5. His solo productions and remixes range from blistering techno to beautifully constructed deep house. Outside of his massive body of work, Roman is widely known as one of the best deejays in all of Europe.
Leftroom label boss, producer and deejay Matt Tolfrey has continually bridged the gap between techno and house. Known for his marathon deejay sets and tastemaker selections, Tolfrey has emerged in recent years as one of Europe's most respected underground dance music deejays and producers.

The facts are easy to establish: Max Cooper has more than 50 original releases, tracks and remixes under his belt, from glitchy reinterpretations of big bands like Hot Chip and Au Revoir Simone to straight dancefloor 12"s like his breakthrough "Serie" originals and remixes for names like Agoria, Dominik Eulberg, Extrawelt, Pig and Dan, Kaiserdisco and Sasha. The approach, meanwhile, is anything but simple. A melancholy composer whose live sets can raise blisters in a club, Cooper is as...

Community Bass Sessions presented by BassDrop
Nobody throws it down like MartyParty – the South African native now residing in Brooklyn NY has been crushing sold out shows and huge festival stages with his huge bass rich extravaganza. The MartyParty live show is an intense, high energy dance party filled with huge bass drops, synth melodies, massive beats and riddled with dirty hip hop acapellas and one shots he calls his “purple opera”. Entranced, nearly basking in the radiance of R/D’s sound, audiences are swallowed up in his vibrant melodies, pounding beats, and zealous dedication to the craft. Dripping with angst and desire, R/D’s compositions can be at times dizzyingly beautiful, heartbreaking in their melancholy and dancefloor-crushing all at once. For over 17 years, Danny Corn has been on the vanguard of electronic music, leaving the trends to other people. As a DJ, he is known as an instrumental player in the formation of the “west coast” sound. A champion of syncopated, bass heavy music, Danny Corn rides the edge of experimental sounds, whilst staying firmly committed to the dancefloor.

Ghostly International Showcase

Since 2003 Decibel has paid tribute to one of North America's finest imprints, Ghostly International. Every year Decibel has hosted a Ghostly Showcase but none bigger than what we're presenting this year.
Long time Decibel veteran and underground electronic music chameleon, Matthew Dear, has just released what is arguably his best album to date, Beams. Rich with NYC post-disco rhythms and attitude, Beams channels the raw energy of Talking Heads, Liquid Liquid and ESG, while offering a healthy dose of Dear's own signature techno pop flair. Matthew will be debuting his new live band configuration for this performance, which will likely span his entire 13-year career. With the release of Tycho's long-awaited 2011 album Dive came universal praise and adoration not only for the album's gorgeously constructed dream pop, but the immersive live band performances that followed. Tycho's world-renowned graphic design chops shine through, both in his meticulous productions and in the well-curated visual elements that accompany each song. After years of hosting Tycho in various configurations and venues at Decibel, we're happy to finally be presenting what we're confident will be the best experience to date. Seattle's own quiet genius Lusine (Jeff McIlwain) has never been one to rest on his laurels. After releasing his most accomplished album to date, A Certain Distance, McIlwain went on to co-score three Hollywood films and compose for various television spots. Earlier this year Jeff announced he has completed his third full-length album for Ghostly International, which we may just get a taste of for this showcase.

Pioneers of Rhythm featuring DJ Shadow and Bonobo
Never before have three highly influential and acclaimed producers/deejays of this caliber shared the stage at Decibel Festival. You can expect nothing less that world-class turntablism, bass mechanics and expert selection from this remarkable line-up.

Described by NME as the "the Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page of the sampler", DJ Shadow's monumental release 'Entroducing…' went on to become one of the most influential albums of the past two decades. Through constant innovation and highly technical sampling techniques, Shadow effectively reinvented instrumental hip hop, triggering a subculture that continues today through producers like Flying Lotus and Danger Mouse. Over the years Shadow has continued to produce and collaborate on a staggering number of releases, including four full-length albums, dozens of EPs, two widely acclaimed U.N.K.L.E. albums, two soundtracks, dozens of deejay recordings and over 100 production credits from hip hop, pop, electronic and R&B artists from around the globe. For this performance Shadow will be debuting his "All Basses Covered" deejay set, sure to once again solidify his place as one of the most innovative and prolific producers and deejays in history. Much like DJ Shadow, Bonobo emerged in the early 90's producing sample based, instrumental hip hop/downtempo, layered with global influences. Bonobo's career has continued to flourish over the past 20 years through highly-acclaimed albums like 'Black Sands' which went on to become one of the best reviewed albums of 2010. A mainstay on the West Coast Festival circuit, Bonobo has become one of the most beloved deejays/performers at festival like Sasquatch, Lighting in a Bottle, What the Festival, Symbiosis, Coachella and Decibel where he delivered a ruckus set of funk, house and breaks that ignited the dance-floor. Through expert drum programming, meticulous sound design and highly entertaining performances, EPROM has taken instrumental hip hop to new and exhilarating heights. Never one to shy away from mainstream urban influences and over-the-top sonic acrobatics, EPROM offers a fresh perspective on West Coast hip hop, sliced and diced for a new generation of festival goers eager to embrace the bass.

Hotflush Showcase
Hotflush first emerged out of the original London Dubstep movement of the early to mid 2000s. Manned by Paul Rose aka Scuba, Hotflush has continued to evolve creatively, all the while building up a diverse roster of talent spanning contemporary house, techno and 2-step. For this label showcase, Hotflush will be presenting three of their most recent signings, including the NYC/Berlin duo Sepalcure, UK house innovator George FitzGerald and NYC's Braille.

Sepalcure's combination of love for bass and 90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two-week collaboration between Praveen Sharma and the prolific Travis Stewart aka Machinedrum. Their 2011 self-titled album garnished massive praise from everyone to Resident Advisor to Pitchfork (e.g. "Best New Music") and lead to three follow up EPs on the Hotflush imprint. George FitzGerald is at the forefront of a youthful group of UK producers straddling house, garage and contemporary bass music. With seven EPs and as many remixes under his belt over the past couple years, George has solidified himself as a key player in the ever-changing landscape of the London underground. Braille is the house moniker of Praveen Sharma (Sepalcure, Benoit and Praveen). With quality releases on Hotflush and Rush Hour, Braille's own brand of bubbly house bridges the gap between classic Chicago House and UK Garage.

Hotflush
Sepalcure’s combination of love for bass and 90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (Praveen & Benoît). Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics.

George FitzGerald

AUS / Hotflush

Red Bull Music Academy and High & Tight present: Nina Kraviz and Roman Flugel

Nina Kraviz is currently the name on everyone's lips in the house and techno community. Very rarely does a DJ/Producer shoot to stardom so quickly - and when they do, they seldom have the talent to back it up. Nina is the exception to the rule. The huge hit "Ghetto Kraviz" combined with her debut album have solidified her as a highly respected producer and DJ. Roman Flügel, the producer, DJ, and label co-owner of Ongaku/Klang/Playhouse bring some german electronic mastery to this lineup. SF Bay Area native Marc Barrite created the DJ/Production alias Dave Aju as a vehicle for his inimitable, fresh, and expressive take on electronic dance music. Drawn to the open-mindedness of the SF underground scene, he soon found himself on the vanguard of contemporary dance music.

OPTICAL 5 : UNDERCURRENT
For this year's final OPTICAL showcase we present three recording artists for the esteemed Chicago label Kranky, perhaps North America's most influential experimental imprint. Started in 1993 by Bruce Adams and Joel Leoschke, the artists it houses are noted for combining experimental and often electronic influences with elements of more traditional rock structures, and many of the artists on Kranky are inspired by or revolve around ambient, psychedelic, and experimental music.

Space-rock luminaries Windy & Carl hail from Dearborn, MI. Comprised of husband-and-wife duo of guitarist Carl Hultgren and bassist/singer Windy Weber, their droney, blurry sound emanates primarily from guitars, particularly via usage of delay effects, reverb effects, and E-Bow, rather than synthesizers. Together they create music with a wide range of atmospheres, from a warm fuzzy blanket, to a deep ocean, and to the open spaces of a frozen antarctic. Since 1992, they've been releasing consistently for a multitude of labels, while running their own record shop, Stormy Records. Highlights of their recorded output includes the albums Depths, Consciousness, and more recently We Will Always Be, all released on Kranky since 1998.

Christina Vantzou is an artist, musician, and composer. She attended the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore (1997-2001) and moved to Brussels, Belgium in 2003 where she currently resides. In recent years sound has become a key aspect of her artistic identity, as a member of The Dead Texan (Kranky) and in 2007 she as a touring member of Sparklehorse. She started to compose her solo works in 2007 using synthesizers, samples, her own voice, and a homemade library of orchestral samples.Over a period of three years, Vantzou meticulously pieced together a 45-minute music composition. Working with Minna Choi (director of Magik*Magik orchestra), who translated the digital score to sheet music for a seven-piece ensemble, these recordings culminated in a debut solo album titled Nº1. The results a sprawling ambient neo-classical score transformed into a full-fledged symphonic suite, which she will be presenting at Decibel Festival this year.

The serene ambient compositions of Loscil come courtesy of Vancouver-based musician Scott Morgan. Taking his moniker from the “looping oscillator” function in the computer music language Csound, Morgan uses custom made Max/MSP sequencers and the occasional live instrument to build robust, droning soundscapes. Morgan cites influences including krautrock pioneers Cluster, minimalist composer Gavin Bryars, and a wealth of film music composers. Loscil’s self-released album, A New Demonstration of Thermodynamic Tendencies, caught the ear of Kranky, who in turn signed Morgan’s project and released Triple Point in October of 2001. Morgan’s second official Loscil album, Submers, followed in 2002, and his third, Plume, arrived in 2006. The highly-praised Endless Falls followed in 2010, a continuous exploration of his signature soundscapes.

PLEASE NOTE: This event ends around 9PM, offering festival attendees the opportunity to enjoy other festival showcases that will be going until 2AM.

For fans of Stars of the Lid, Brian Eno and My Bloody Valentine.

Shameless & Decibel Present

Seattle Proper

All locals. New Venue. Funktion-One sound system. Shame off, game on!

Shameless and Decibel Festival go way back. As in, since day one. Now they’re teaming up again to throw a very extraordinary showcase featuring an all local Seattle lineup. With so much talent right here in the city why look anywhere else but home? Featuring state of the art lighting, a Funktion-One sound system and some killer Seattle Techno.

Based in Seattle, Shameless Productions is both an event production company with a focus on emerging electronic music and a collective of performers, producers, artists, party-makers, dancers, organizers, and other skilled creatives. In 2003 Shameless started off as a weekly underground dance night in the basement of the Alibi Room and has since become one of the cities most respected underground dance music collectives by throwing numerous legendary club nights, afterparties, Decibel Festival events and other shenanigans. From day one, each Shameless party was a special one regardless of the wide ranges of genres and bookings represented. With an eye towards the cutting edge, but deep respect for electronic music's rich history, Shameless has kept its finger on the pulse of Seattle's underground for the past decade and yet keeps looking forward. The future is bright as Shameless plans to finally launch its own record label in 2013. In the meantime, Shameless continues to consistently produce exciting events collectively and rock parties across the region as individual artists.

Emancipator

Hydeout Productions / 1320 Records
To some, it must seem like this young electronic producer came out of nowhere this year. Emancipator played his first live show in July 2009, opening for Bonobo at the Roseland Theater (cap. 1500). Since then, he’s toured with Bassnectar, STS9, Pretty Lights, drawn crowds at festivals like Trinumeral and Symbiosis, and closed out Sound Tribe Sector 9’s late night parties in Denver at the request of the band. But those in the know have been following Emancipator since he...

Yppah

Ninja Tune
Yppah (pronounced 'Yippah'), sometimes know as Joe Corrales, Jr., released his debut album You Are Beautiful At All Times in November of 2006 on Ninja Tune. This stunning debut is a lush mix of beautiful and often times melancholic electronica, breakbeat drum samples with shoegazer melodies set in an atmospheric sound landscape. Joe spent his early teen years playing guitar and bass in rock bands, then later as a scratch DJ who mixed hip hop and house in clubs sets. He's also a founding...

Anomie Belle

Anomie Belle’s unique vocal stylings and classical roots have led her to develop a cinematic, provocative, ethereal sound characterized by a sensual and experimental mix of electronic and acoustic instrumentation. She has collaborated with members of the Sneaker Pimps, The Posies, Mr Lif (Thievery Corporation), Trespassers William, Big Spider’s Back and Yppah (Ninja Tune), and has toured with Tricky, The Album Leaf, Little Dragon, Bajofondo, and Kathryn Calder (New Pornographers...

The Great Mundane

Dropping Gems / 1320 Records
Video game deprived and pop culturally challenged, The Great Mundane grew up in a southeastern Michigan home where TV was made of cardboard boxes, the tree in the backyard was his best friend and the words “I am bored” were household blasphemy. Aside from occasional piano lessons, he passed time deep in his own imagination and on spontaneous road trips, a.k.a his mother’s famous mystery van rides, that seem to have provoked his current state of restlessness. Itching to hit the...

IG88

Nueva Forma
Branden Clarke, otherwise known as IG88, would maybe like to fool you into believing that he and his buttons are buried somewhere in between a spray of ambient elation and the sands of a remote desert planet – but there’s something else here. Something tangible and soulful, something raw and quick. Something like the full breath of a thunderhead, the shards of sparks following a blunt and sonic hit to the nail on the head.   Out of the roving and admittedly robotic mind of a...

wndfrm

Nueva Forma
Lush pastures of tone and colour, nuance and subtlety, structural minimalism. Eager to translate the soundscapes in his head into audible format, Tim Westcott of wndfrm (formerly known as Cloudburst) has spent the last decade or so learning how this can be done via electronic composition, found sounds, and a thirst for tonal re-interpretation and DSP-lensed interaction with the here and now.

A Gap Between

Nueva Forma
If someone could make a musical mash-up of a soft serve ice cream cone at twilight and a jellies-clad girl running through a sprinkler, it would be A Gap Between. Though born to the precipitation of Portland, Oregon, his laid-back grooves and nostalgic samplings suggest anything but the opaque backdrop of his youth.   With nods to ’70s bucolic melodies, ’80s disco & dance, and ’90s instrumental hip hop, his style takes aim instead at all of those bright urban...

The Bear and The Sea

Nueva Forma
Damon Sheeley, otherwise known as The Bear & The Sea, may be a nature boy, born of the Pacific Northwest – bred on the hazy gray waters of both the sea and the air and inspired thusly – but he was also raised on jazz, 80s synth-pop, Mama’s classical music, MTV, and poverty. This, my friends, is a standard formula for what you’ll hear in his music – bombination, woozy soul, pure Oregonian modular muddiness, and rock-steady gumption. | | There’s something...

dB Finale

For this year's Decibel Finale we're pleased to be presenting debut live performances from three artists that have been helped in redefining underground dance music over the past decade.

Headlining the 2012 Decibel Festival, we're proud to present the Northwest debut live performance of Spanish producer John Talabot, featuring vocalist Pional. Talabot's brilliant 2012 full-length 'Fin' received universal praise from journalists, deejays and music fans alike. Capturing human emotion like few electronic music composers have been able to accomplish, Talabot has established himself as one of the great producers to emerge over the past decade. Since moving to Berlin in 2006, Seattle ex-pat Bruno Pronsato (aka Steven Ford) has built up a reputation as one of the most skilled performers/producers in minimal techno. As Public Lover,  Steven and vocalist/producer Ninca Leece create beautifully crafted house music in the spirit of luminaries Herbert and Luomo. Not only will this performance be the West Coast debut of Public Lover, it will be a long-awaited homecoming for Steven, whose last performance at the 2008 Decibel Festival left fans and friends wanting more. Dave Pezzner is Seattle's most prolific underground dance music producer. His off-kilter house productions with Bob Hanson as Jacob London helped put Seattle's house music scene on the map, while his more recent solo work has solidified him as one of North America's brightest producers. Pezzner will be debuting his latest live incarnation, which features new material and a brave A/V configuration that utilizes several guitar amps designed to replicate a live band.

Pezzner

Freerange Records
In the 90’s, recording music as the much loved Jacob London (with Bob Hansen), releases on the legendary Classic Music Company, Doubledown and Dotbleep, earned Dave Pezzner a reputation well beyond his native west coast - cutting his chops by creating eccentric house and break beat rhythms like none other. Deciding to go it alone as Pezzner, in 2008, allowed him to make his mark as a solo artist. It wasn't long before he found his initial offerings signed by the hugely well respected...

Bruno Pronsato

thesongsays
In 2006, Bruno moved from Seattle to Berlin to do techno full time, and it wasn’t long before he made a name for himself. His debut 12" was released in 2003 on Orac, a Kompakt distributed label, and was followed the next year by a full-length album, Silver Cities. Soon Bruno had the attention of labels like Philpot and Musique Risquée, both of whom released Bruno’s next EP’s. By 2005, Bruno’s live performance—an unusually nimble and improvisatory...

John Talabot

Permanent Vacation
John Talabot is a youngster from Barcelona with a rather special way of approaching music. His influences range from flamenco to northern soul, from African music to traditional Asian songs. His first commercial effort on German label Permanent Vacation included the A side “Afrika” plus another two tracks,”Naomi” and “Korlee” . Shortly after (June 2009), “Sunshine” debuted via Talabot’s own label Hivern. “Sunshine” resurfaced on...

Friends of Friends Music Showcase

Driven by the exceptional curatorial vision and the writing of label boss Leeor Brown, Friends of Friends Music has been helping a new breed of young LA beat-smiths reach a new audience. This stacked showcase features four acclaimed producers, all coming off acclaimed releases, remixes and exposure through some of the world's most important media outlets (e.g. FACT, XLR8R and Boiler Room).

Over the past two years, Shlohmo has emerged one of the West Coast's most consistent producers, remix artists and deejays. His wildly popular remixes of Drake's 'Crew Love' and LOL Boys 'Changes' made their way into countless mixes in 2012 and his 2011 full-length 'Bad Vibes' was widely regarded as one of the defining albums to come out of the LA beat scene. For the past several years Salva has been exploring various intersections between hip hop and underground dance music. With heavy emphasis on 808 beats and expansive sound design, Salva has build up a reputation as "one to watch". Next is the LA/Montreal duo LOL Boys, who had a massive year with underground hits like 'Changes' and remixes/edits of RL Grime, Lil Wayne, Fiona Apple and Radiohead. Another young LA talent, Groundislava is hot off his acclaimed full-length release 'Feel Me', which features collaborations with other LA producers Shlohmo and Baths.

Groundislava

Wedidit Collective / Friends of Friends
For Jasper Patterson AKA Groundislava, creativity combined with the video game, sci-fi sounds and general aesthetics of the 1980’s have been instilled since day one. A young 20 year-old hailing from Venice, California, Jasper’s father both animated and directed the classic “Take On Me” video by A-Ha and while Groundislava isn’t exactly the next logical step from the Norwegian new wave group, Jasper takes that same creative freedom and emotion and injects it into a...

Salva

Frite Nite / FoF Music
Paul Salva is quickly becoming one of electronic music's most exciting and diverse figureheads. After his rave-reviewed 'Complex Housing' LP on Friends of Friends in early 2011, he went on to remix artists such as Shlohmo, Rainbow Arabia, Miguel Migs, Om Unit, Beans, The Glitch Mob and a handful of others. He then followed up with his again critically acclaimed 'Yellobone' EP, meanwhile on his own label Frite Nite released the 'Surreal Estate' compilation featuring artists like Sepalcure, XI, B...

WeDidIt / FoF Music / Error Broadcast
L.A. native Henry Laufer, the 21-year-old producer better known as Shlohmo, is a lo-fi beat junkie and field-recording enthusiast, whose crackling, low-BPM compositions update Boards of Canada's filmstrip-soundtrack wooziness. An LA native, Laufer grew up listening to "stuff like DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin, M83 stuff with some sort of cinematic vision." He started making beats when he was 14, but "didn't really do it with any sort of purpose until I was like 17 or 18." That was also around the...
